From San Tomà to Santa Maria del Giglio
From the Scuola Grande di San Rocco with Tintoretto's masterpieces to the contemporary works on display at Ca' Rezzonico: let yourself be enchanted by the cultural variety that characterises the sestieri of Santa Croce and Dorsoduro.
The Scuola Grande di San Rocco was founded in 1478 and it is the only one that survived the end of the Republic of Venice. It still hosts the famous and magnificent paintings of the Old and New Testaments by Tintoretto.
The basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is considered a masterpiece of Gothic-Venetian religious architecture. From Titian's Assumption to Giovanni Bellini's triptych of the Madonna and Child with Saints Nicholas, Peter, Mark and Benedict, the basilica still preserves precious works of art that bear witness to more than five centuries of the city's culture and history.
Dedicated to the patron saint against the plague, the church of San Sebastiano is part of the monastic complex founded by the Gerolamini monks in the fourteenth century. Inside you can admire Veronese's largest and most important pictorial cycle, depicting not only the life of the saint, but also stories from the life of Esther in the Old Testament.
The Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista has been the seat of the lay confraternity of the same name for over seven centuries, as well as presently home to the museum. Inside, you can admire masterpieces by Palma il Giovane, Tintoretto and Longhi. Today, it is also a venue for events, conferences, concerts and exhibitions.
In the Dorsoduro sestiere, the Gallerie dell’Accademia complex houses the most important collection of Venetian painting in the world. The collections, housed in thirty-seven rooms, range from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century and include absolute masterpieces such as Giorgione’s Tempest, Titian’s Pietà and Veronese’s The Feast in the House of Levi.
Ca' Centani is best known for being the birthplace of Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni. After being purchased by the municipality and renovated, the house became the Museo Goldoniano e Centro di Studi Teatrali (Goldoni Museum and Centre for Theatre Studies), open to the public since 1953.
Ca’ Rezzonico is the museum of eighteenth-century Venice. Housed in a palazzo on the Grand Canal, the museum spans three floors and contains works by masters of eighteenth-century Venetian art, including Pietro Longhi and Giandomenico Tiepolo. You can also see the interiors of the historic Farmacia ai do San Marchi, the Egidio Martini Art Gallery and the Mestrovich Collection.
Originally built to a design by architect Giannantonio Selva, the Gran Teatro La Fenice is considered the most important opera house in the city. After having been the victim of two major fires, it was finally reopened to the public in 2004, finding new life.
A few steps from the gondola pontoon at Punta della Dogana stands the church of Santa Maria del Giglio. Rebuilt several times, most recently in the second half of the seventeenth century, it has a Baroque façade rich in high-relief decorations and sculptures. Inside you can admire the only work by Pieter Paul Rubens preserved in Venice, a Madonna and Child with the young Baptist.
